Mascara: all the questions you've always had (and finally, the answers)

Mascara: tutte le domande che ti sei sempre fatt* (e finalmente le risposte)

Reading time: 6 minutes

If you also have a drawer full of mascaras and shattered dreams, this article is for you. Because that's exactly the situation Giulia, a self-proclaimed beauty addict, found herself in, with a collection of "almost right" mascaras and none truly her own: too voluminous, too dry, spider-leg effect after the second coat. The perfect mascara seemed like an urban legend.

Until Giulia decided to ask the right questions to the person who really had the answers: Valentino, Mulac Pro Artist, ready to guide her in her choice. Let's see what they talked about.

Why is it so hard to find the right mascara?

Because not all lashes are created equal.

Length, thickness, direction, quantity: everyone has their own, and the best mascara for full lashes won't necessarily work wonders on short, dense lashes.

The problem is that we often choose based on packaging or advertising promises, without considering the two factors that truly determine the result: the formula and the brush. They decide everything. The Mulac mascara collection starts exactly from this point: products designed for real needs, with vegan and high-performance formulas.

What's the difference between mascara wands, and which one do you recommend?

It's the most important question, and also the one least often answered.

Let's start with the main difference: silicone vs. fiber wands. A silicone wand is precise, separates lashes one by one without clumping, and is a good option if you're looking for a defined and natural look, or if you have short, dense lashes. Among products with a silicone wand, you can try Black Mamba, the lengthening mascara perfect for achieving a clean, neat look with well-separated lashes.

A fiber (nylon) wand picks up more product and creates immediate volume, but requires a bit more attention to avoid a "spidery" effect. To achieve a full and intense look from the first coat, the ideal choice is the volumizing and curling mascara Gentleman.

The shape matters as much as the material: a large, rounded wand gives volume, a thin, tapered one separates and defines, and a curved one helps curl lashes from the root. There's no single best one: there's the one that's right for you and the effect you want to achieve. If you don't want to choose between volume and definition, a new generation comes into play: Lash CEO. Its wand is designed to work on multiple dimensions at once and, thanks to the reservoir that gradually releases the product, it allows you to achieve volume, curl, and definition in a single swipe. A mascara designed for those who don't want to compromise on either the result or the experience.

Why does my mascara clump and how can I prevent it?

Clumps are almost always caused by actions that can be easily corrected: they form when applying the second coat when the first is already too dry, or by using a brush that picks up too much product without distributing it well.

The first tip on how to apply mascara without clumps? Gently twist the wand inside the tube instead of pumping it: this way you pick up the right amount of product without introducing air.

Start at the root with the wand slightly angled and move it upwards with a slight zigzag motion. And if you want to apply a second coat, do it while the first is still wet.

There's also a factor that almost no one considers: the PAO, the symbol on the packaging that indicates the maximum period of use after opening. A smudging or clumping mascara isn't always due to technique: sometimes it's simply old. One that's been open for more than 3-4 months tends to deteriorate, and from then on, no wand can make a difference.

4 tips for a clump-free application:

1. Swirl the wand inside the tube, don't pump it!

2. Wiggle the wand from root to tip in a zig-zag motion

3. Apply a second coat while the first is still wet

4. Always check the PAO!

How to apply mascara without smudging your eyelids?

The first tip is about posture, and it changes everything: bring your chin towards the mirror instead of lifting your face.

This creates the right space on the eyelids, preventing the mascara wand from touching the skin: everything becomes much more intuitive.

The choice of product also plays a role: a precise and not overly loaded wand deposits fewer excesses on the eyelid. The Lash CEO, thanks to its action that separates lashes and reduces the risk of smudging. It also features an ergonomic handle, which ensures more precise application, reducing the risk of smudges.

What if the eyelid or eye still gets dirty during application?

It can happen, but don't panic! It's simple, just wait for the product to dry, take a dry cotton swab and gently press it over the product. Your eyelid will be instantly clean again!

How to lengthen short or straight eyelashes with mascara?

Both technique and product choice come into play here.

To lengthen your eyelashes with mascara, always start from the root and sweep outwards with an elongated motion: this visually emphasizes length and pulls the lashes upwards.

Even before performing this step, I recommend using an eyelash curler: already curled lashes appear longer even before the product touches them.

It's also worth opting for a mascara with a lengthening formula and a thin brush, which distributes the product all the way to the tips, where the visual lengthening effect is created.

Mulac's Lash CEO works on both fronts: it curls lashes during application and lengthens them all the way to the tips.

How long does mascara last?

Less than you might think, usually.

An opened mascara should be replaced within 4-6 months of opening: after that, the formula deteriorates, its performance decreases, and the risk of bacterial contamination increases, and consider that you are using the product very close to your eyes.

The PAO symbol on the packaging tells you exactly how long it lasts after it's opened: it's really worth following it, not just reading it. Unopened, a mascara can be stored for up to 2 years. But from the moment you break the seal, the countdown begins.

Is there a mascara that can provide volume, length, and curl?

Few, but they do exist.

Most mascaras are created with a specific purpose: either volume, or lengthening, or curling. Those who want all three together inevitably end up layering different products, risking weighing down their lashes precisely when they are trying to enhance them.

To truly achieve all three of these effects without compromise, something different is needed.

The Lash CEO was created precisely for this purpose: a 3-in-1 mascara that works on volume, curl, and definition simultaneously, for full, curled, and perfectly separated lashes from the very first coat.

It's not just the formula that sets it apart: the packaging is also carefully designed to be ergonomic and innovative, because the user experience is as important as the final result.

Your ideal mascara really does exist.

The right mascara is not the best-selling one or the one with the prettiest packaging. It's the one that speaks the same language as your lashes: it adapts to their shape, your application technique, and the effect you want to show the world every day. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but there is one that's right for you, and when you find it, you'll know it from the very first stroke.

It's precisely from this idea that Mulac's Lash CEO was born: because you shouldn't have to choose between volume, curl, and definition. You can have all three, without compromise.
